Velehrad - centre of religious life among the foothills Chřiby

The village Velehrad is situated among the foothills Chřiby 7 km from the Hungarian settlement in a picturesque part of Moravian Slovakia. It is an important spiritual center, a place of numerous religious pilgrimages, meetings and celebrations

The beginnings of the present Velehrad go back to the beginning of the 13th century when the first Cistercian monastery in Moravia. The premises of the former monastery with one of the largest churches in our country is an important cultural monuments, documenting the development of architecture and art from the late Romanesque period to the present. Cistercian monastery was abolished in 1784. In 1890 the monastery was renewed order of the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits worked here until 1950, again returned early 90s of the last century.In Czechoslovakia itself in the interwar period Velehrad experiencing its glorious era. A period of great hope interrupted by World War II and soon after her time, which not only destroyed the Jesuit college, but in every way suppressed all forms of religious life.
